Would YOU travel to Nagarjuna Sagar? We think the right question is: When should you travel to Nagarjuna Sagar? The ideal answer is post monsoon when the lake is full and dam gates are open. But is not so simple to plan such a trip.
Nagarjuna Sagar is one of the largest dams in India and is located about 180 km from Hyderabad. So it was like mandatory for us to plan a road trip to the dam.
It was just after monsoon had hit the region in full flow. We had checked and checked again if the dam gates were open. And the only sort of relevant news item we found was in Telugu (neither of us speak Telugu). So we tapped in our friend network and asked one of the Telugu speaking guy to translate. He reported that the gates were open then and so we were off the next morning.
After over 3 hrs of drive as we were reaching the dam, anticipation built and our hopes rose because we thought we heard water. Alas! Our hopes had risen only to be crushed as we turned the corner and saw that the dam was dry as a bone. The local vendor informed that the dam gates had not been open this season.
Damn that friend! (Well, he was probably helping us to the best of his knowledge)
As little could be gained by cursing the friend again and again, we decided to go off to other attractions nearby.
As we headed to Ethipothala waterfalls we had little hope due to paucity of water in the region. This time we weren’t disappointed. As we didn’t expect anything, we were satisfied with the narrow waterfall. Expectations play such a big role when looking at satisfaction levels.
We had lunch at the Haritha resort and limited options meant we didn’t have to choose from many.
Our last stop before heading home was the dam reservoir. But again the water problem struck and there was no boating because water level was high. What irony!
What do you get when you remove water from the trip to a dam? A long drive and our trip to Nagarjuna Sagar.
