We had one extra day when we planned out trip to Wayanad and Ooty. So we explored for destinations nearby and we got to know about this gem. Kannur is an unexplored beach town in North Kerala. It has pristine beaches including a unique drive-in beach. So we decided to spend a day there. And it was an undeniably right decision.
Stay
We had booked a beach resort in Kannur. We reached there in night. And surprisingly, we were the only guests in the resort for that night. We were little skeptical about staying there, but did not have any other option at that time. So we checked-in into the resort. It was kind of a home stay and we had our meals already booked. Food was delicious specially the mango chutney. Yummy! The resort had a secluded stretch of beach which sort of our private beach.
Private beach
Cut-off from both sides by sea rocks, our “private beach” was perfect. We enjoyed the morning frolicking on the rocky beach. Water was not very clean (sandy and sea vegetation only) but it was pleasant. So we could not stop ourselves from getting drenched. We enjoyed in water and did lots of photography.
Thottada Beach
Thottada beach was just 200 m walk from our resort. The water was clearer there. Since Kannur is not a popular destination, so you do not have much crowd. Apart from us, there were only 2-3 people on the beach. We played with the sand, created castles and got drenched into water. And we did not realize where the time flew.
Muzhappilangad Beach (Drive-in beach)
India does not have many drive-in beaches. But you can have this unique experience at Kannur. Muzhappilangad is a long beach and you will get larger crowds here. Most days you can actually drive your car or bike on to the beach. Unfortunately, we could not drive on the beach. Due to holiday times, there was too much crowd and police were not allowing the cars on beach. But yes, we managed to drive right next to it. It is a lovely beach. The sunset view was perfect. We wanted to spend more time but had to leave because it was getting late for us.
Essential Info
Kannur is around 120 km (3 hrs.) drive from Wayanad and about 100 km from Kozhikode.
Kannur is a perfect place to just relax. Do not expect much in terms of sightseeing except few good beaches. We would say, it would be better if you keep more time for Muzhappilangad beach. Best would be to see sunset from there.
